Rachel Maddow reports on President Clinton’s already-released tax returns, receives record-low ratings

NEW YORK CITY — Rachel Maddow’s show on MSNBC suffered from record-low ratings after the host dedicated an entire segment to the president’s tax returns. While a candidate, of course, now-President Hillary Rodham Clinton released all her state and federal tax returns for every year going back to 1973.

Maddow’s detailed dive into Clinton’s returns reveals unparalleled financial integrity on behalf of our president. Clinton has paid an average effective tax rate of 36 percent, donated tens of millions of dollars to charities, and taken part in no shady financial transactions with foreign oligarchs.

While encouraging for American democracy, President Clinton’s transparent tax returns did little to attract an audience for Maddow’s show Tuesday night. Based on Twitter hashtags, just one individual was discussing the show: failed Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, who apparently tuned in to Maddow from Russia.

As a candidate, Trump flatly refused to release his own returns before the election — the first aspiring president to do so since the days of Watergate, and a position that hurt him in the election, when he lost to Clinton by 3 million votes.

Trump’s attacks on Clinton have continued in full force since the election despite his humiliating loss and “ebullient hypocrisy,” according to the Washington Post.

During Maddow’s show, Trump tweeted: “HilLIEry is a CROOKED. Why won’t she release her tax returns from before 1974? What is she trying to hide?”

Tomorrow, President Clinton plans to address a crowd in a speech on sensible reforms for the Affordable Care Act.
