Republican Congressman Ron DeSantis introduced a provision aimed at undermining Robert Mueller’s ability to thoroughly investigate Trump and Russia’s inappropriate relationship. The provision would put a limit on Mueller’s funding and the scope that he’s able to look into. It’s no wonder he’s introduced this since DeSantis is now under investigation himself.
Politico points out:
In a statement, DeSantis said the order appointing Mueller as special counsel “didn’t identify a crime to be investigated and practically invites a fishing expedition.”
“Congress should use its spending power to clarify the scope and limit the duration of this investigation,” he explained. Deputy Attorney General Rod “Rosenstein has said that the DOJ doesn’t conduct fishing expeditions; the corollary to this admonition should be that Congress will not fund a fishing expedition.”
Several House Democrats are pushing amendments to protect the Mueller probe.
For instance, Rep. Nita Lowey of New York, ranking Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee, proposed a measure to prohibit the Justice Department from obstructing Mueller’s work.
House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) has voiced support for Mueller in response to reports that Trump was considering firing the special counsel.
“I think the best advice is to let Robert Mueller do his job,” Ryan said in June.
The Democratic Coalition Against Trump confirmed their investigation into DeSantis for this attempt to interfere with Mueller’s investigation. Since he’s clearly trying to help Trump get away with his crimes and treason, he has to be a suspect as well.
Many political pundits are saying this effort to derail Mueller’s investigation is not going to get much support. The House of Representatives may pass it, but the Senate would definetely not.
While we don’t know the specifics of why DeSantis made the move to limit Mueller’s investigation, it can only be assumed it’s to gain favor with Trump. Perhaps he’s hoping to fill one of those empty White House positions and there are a lot to choose from. The results from the investigation into DeSantis can’t be released fast enough.
