Please, be patient when we trust too much:

Please,
be patient when we trust too much.
when we remark with surprise that we didn’t expect you to remember when that thing started we invited you to
or that you’d even show up.

It is only because we are the children of broken promises, and empty murmurs of tomorrow.

Please,
be patient when we trust too much.
when we appear as though we might cry because you remembered a favorite food or a minute detail when we assumed you had forgotten.

It is only because we were born from the bones that had broken with each dismissal or ignorance of the words we carefully planned.

Please,
be patient when we trust too much.
when we do not believe you fully when you say you’ll call or text later on, and even though we don’t say it out loud, you can see it in your eyes that we are preparing for your goodbye.

It is only because we have walked upon the backs of those who have fallen over themselves trying to be the trusting one who would never doubt the words of a partner who has no intention to call.

Please,
be patient when we trust too much.
when our smile cracks our face because you followed through,
did what you said you were going to,
showed up when you promised you would,
didn’t forget that important thing we reminded you of.

It is only because you are treading, unknowingly, through a garden of freshly-decaying hopeful smiles and nods of acceptance gifted to the ones who promised
just like you
but didn’t do as they said they would.

So please,
be patient when we trust too much.
because we’re praying that was the last time we trusted too much, too.
