Special Olympics Spring Games to Be Held at West Point USMA:

WEST POINT – More than 1,000 athletes from Orange, Rockland, Sullivan, Dutchess, Westchester, Putnam and Ulster counties, and about 1,700 cadet and community volunteers will gather for the 43rd Annual Hudson Valley Region Spring Special Olympics at West Point, May 5.

The event kicks off at 10 a.m. with a parade of athletes and opening ceremonies at Shea Stadium. Events will continue through 4 p.m. at the Arvin Cadet Physical Development Center, Gillis Field House and the North Athletic Field. Competitive events featured are Track & Field, Swimming and Adaptive Games.

Athletes from West Point, Monroe-Woodbury, North East Special Recreation, Wallkill and many other schools and organizations from the Hudson Valley are expected to attend. Omicron Delta Kappa, the Leadership Honor Society at West Point, hosts the event. The U.S. Corps of Cadets Color Guard and the West Point Parachute Team are among those scheduled to participate during the day’s activities.

The Torch Run will begin from the West Point Middle School parking lot at 9:45 a.m., incorporating a contingent of cadets and community support. The group will proceed from the West Point Middle School parking lot down Washington Road, stopping at North Dock at approximately 10:20 a.m., then on to Shea Stadium for the torch lighting.

Community members are encouraged to line Washington Road to cheer on the runners. Competitions are scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m.

The event is free and open to the public. Attendees should enter through Thayer or Stony Lonesome gates. Proper identification will be required upon entering academy grounds and all vehicles are subject to search. Concessions will be available throughout the day.
