Rouhani says Iran should respond to Trump’s ‘empty threats’ with action:

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said Wednesday that the country does not need to trade barbs with President Trump, but instead should respond with action.

“There is no need for us to respond to any nonsensical comment and answer back to them,” Rouhani told his cabinet, according to The Associated Press. “We should respond to them with action.”

Rouhani, making his first public comments since Trump vowed Iran would suffer severe consequences for threatening the United States, brushed off the president’s rhetoric as “cheap comments” and “empty threats.”

He said the “strongest response to their cheap comments” would be “indifference to their plots and choosing to resist and foil their schemes.”

Rouhani was referencing Trump’s all-caps tweet on Sunday in which he warned Iranian leadership that it would face “consequences the likes of which few throughout history have ever suffered before” if it threatened the U.S. again.

Donald J. Trump

@realDonaldTrump

To Iranian President Rouhani: NEVER, EVER THREATEN THE UNITED STATES AGAIN OR YOU WILL SUFFER CONSEQUENCES THE LIKES OF WHICH FEW THROUGHOUT HISTORY HAVE EVER SUFFERED BEFORE. WE ARE NO LONGER A COUNTRY THAT WILL STAND FOR YOUR DEMENTED WORDS OF VIOLENCE & DEATH. BE CAUTIOUS!

That tweet appeared to be in response to Rouhani’s remarks that war with Iran “is the mother of all wars.” The Iranian leader also seemed to leave the door open to diplomatic talks, saying peace with Iran “is the mother of all peace.”

Tensions between the two countries has been heightened in recent years. In May, Trump withdrew the U.S. from the Iran nuclear deal, an Obama-era agreement that lifted sanctions on Tehran in exchange for the country abandoning its nuclear program.

The other countries involved in the Iran deal have vowed to uphold the agreement, even in the United States’ absence.
